NV Dynamics was hired by Larsen and Toubro Limited (L&T), Construction to measure vibration at selected locations, both at natural ground level and tunnel level along the alignment of Mumbai Metro Line-3.
Ultra-low frequency vibration transducers (seismic grade) were configured at each identified chainage locations at both ground level and tunnel level. In the tunnel level, one set of transducers were mounted on the track concrete and the other set on the tunnel wall at a height of 2.4m. At the ground level, one set of transducers were mounted on the ground. Each set consisted of three (3) transducers mounted in three orthogonal directions (X, Y & Z).
The transducers were then connected to a multi-channel data acquisition system and configured to record the vibration acceleration data during multiple train pass-by. In addition to this, ambient vibration data was also recorded in the absence of train movement to quantify the existing vibrations from other pre-existing sources.
The vibration data was processed and the results were compared against the vibration limits referred to in RDSO’s CT-38 document. As an additional requirement, the obtained vibration values were adjusted to predict ground borne noise levels which is in accordance with RDSO CT-38 document.
