Ground-borne Vibration assessment for an upcoming laboratory project at 26 locations within a 25-acre site



A leading global real estate and investment management company retained NV Dynamics to assess ground vibration levels for a 25-acre property. The area under consideration shares its boundaries with a commercial – goods railway terminal and its associated roads. A research facility is to be constructed at this location, housing sensitive equipment and instrumentation that are highly susceptible to ground borne vibrations.

A total of 26 locations for vibration assessment were identified which includes a location where a sensitive lab is expected to be set up. Vibration monitoring was carried out at 24 locations spread over the 25-acre plot, a location along the north boundary of the property which is closest to the adjacent railway terminal and at a location where a sensitive lab is expected. Vibration data was acquired continuously for 2 hours at each of these 24 locations using ultra-low frequency transducers (seismic grade) throughout the assessment. At each individual location, three (3) transducers were mounted (orthogonal directions – X, Y & Z) onto a metal pile that is driven into the ground. These transducers were connected to a multichannel data acquisition system configured to continuously acquire vibration data throughout the task.

The acquired vibration data was processed and the results are compared against Vibration Criteria (VC) curves for compatibility.
