Project Description

Vibration and Natural Frequency assessments were carried-out at the ‘Sea Side Upper Beam’ (SSBU) and ‘Boom End’ (BE) locations in 2 orthogonal directions (Trolley direction and Gantry direction) while the crane was made to operate at with-load and without-load conditions. The above tests were conducted with normal and emergency braking to excite the large STS cranes by its own inertial forces.

Ultra-Low-Frequency Vibration transducers in 2 mutually perpendicular directions at SSUB and BE location. The transducers are connected to Multi-channel Data Acquisition Systems and were configured to record the vibration acceleration data throughout the task.

The vibration data is processed to obtain the displacement time data and frequency spectrum. The Natural frequencies of the STS cranes as low as 0.25 Hz and 0.62 Hz were determined when the cranes were excited in Gantry and Trolley directions respectively.

The results from the tests were compared with the requirements for compliance and verified that the natural frequency of the STS cranes were within the limits of design.
